Swan Song - Ryerson destroys Liberal Arts at Wells
Sent to the Wells College community by the Music Department on May 9, 2011
The entire community is cordially invited to attend the last Swan Song of the Wells College Music Program on Thursday evening, May 12th at eight o'clock in Barler Recital Hall.
At the close of this semester, a 143 year tradition of music instruction and performance will end at our college, with the dissolution of the music concentration and the elimination of all
individual music lessons, the entire studio composition program, several of our established performance ensembles, and all but two of our classroom courses.
This semester more than 150 students are participating in the Wells College Music program, and over half of the students currently on campus have been enrolled in Music Department courses, lessons, and ensembles at one time or another in their college careers. A comparable percentage of alumnae/i, both living and deceased, developed and nurtured a love of music here that sustained them far beyond their years in Aurora. In spite of this clearly demonstrated interest and support by students and alumnae/i, the music program -representing one of the foundational liberal arts - is being destroyed in this liberal arts institution.
Please come to our Swan Song performances and celebrate with us the role of music in our lives and in the history of Wells College.
